Clearwater Potomac Nutrient Bank

Clearwater Potomac is a proposed stream restoration project to generate nutrient offset credits within the Potomac River watershed. Historical land uses within and directly adjacent to this bank were dominated by agricultural and silvicultural operations. To create a more conducive environment for agricultural production, the land was altered with tree clearing, ditching, stream channelization, and dredging, resulting in harsh ecological repercussions.

This is an exciting opportunity to achieve significant nutrient reductions in the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay. We proposed restoration of 7,941 linear feet of degraded, actively eroding stream channel and re-establishment of 14.63 acres of native forested riparian buffer.

Using natural stream channel design and native plantings, our work will improve local water quality from reduction of sediment and nutrients that feed directly into tidal waters of the Potomac River, increase and diversify aquatic and terrestrial habitat, and establish and maintain a functional riparian ecosystem. These positive impacts will generate DEQ-certified nutrient credits for trading among entities seeking off site stormwater compliance options.

We are eager to begin work on this Bank later in 2022 and update this post with results!
